Blood Bank

Regional Blood Centre, Teaching Hospital Jaffna is popularly referred to as the Cluster center Jaffna and caters to the blood and blood component needs of the Northern Region. The Jaffna Cluster is one of the 24 cluster centers of the National Blood Transfusion Service. All island Blood Banks are centrally coordinated by the National Blood Transfusion Service. This unique system enables to maintain standards of NBTS, with the recommendations of WHO Island wide. Teaching Hospital Jaffna Blood Bank use modern technology and equipment to maintain optimal standards in their services. Some of the routine services of the blood bank are Blood collection from donors, Donor education, motivation and retention of the voluntary blood donors, Blood grouping, antibody screening and cross matching blood for the patient needs for medical and surgical purposes. Teaching Hospital Blood Bank is an essential and an emergency service of the hospital providing a 24/7/365 days, round the clock by well trained and highly competent staff.

Other services of the Blood bank are Blood component processing and preparation, screening the blood for infectious disease markers, conducting regular antenatal clinics for the follow up of mothers with Rh negative blood group, minor blood group antibodies, Platelet Rich Plasma preparation for various clinics such as Dermatology, orthopedic, Oro Maxilla Facial, plastic surgical clinic patient carrying out Therapeutic Plasma exchange for life saving clinical needs.

Teaching Hospital Blood Bank provides clinical exposure and lectures for the medical students, Medical Laboratory Science students and the Nursing students of the University of Jaffna. In addition, the students of the PHI school Jaffna also are lectured according to their curricular needs.
